Robert Ruck – 1982 Cedar & Brazilian Rosewood Classical Guitar

Few names in American luthiery carry the weight of Robert Ruck, and this 1982 example is an outstanding representation of his work. Built exactly 10 years after Manuel Barrueco’s legendary 1972 No. 58 Ruck, this instrument captures the hallmarks that make Ruck guitars so sought after—rich sustain, depth, and an incredibly open sound. Plus, so much volume that you would guess its a doubletop!

Over the years, I’ve played numerous Ruck guitars, and each has its own distinct voice. This particular example stands out for its remarkable tonal balance and responsiveness, offering the depth and warmth Ruck guitars are known for while maintaining exceptional clarity and projection.

Key Features:

  • Top: Cedar, with a beautifully aged patina and Ruck’s striking mosaic rosette.

  • Back & Sides:Brazilian rosewood, rich in color and character, with no cracks or repairs.

  • Bracing: Traditional 7-fan bracing, with each brace running parallel to the grain rather than in a typical fanned pattern.

  • Scale & Nut Width:655mm scale, 54mm nut width (customized with a 43mm string spacing for improved comfort; includes the original nut and saddle, with the original nut featuring a slightly wider 44mm string spacing for those who prefer a more traditional feel).

  • Frets:Recently refretted with the assistance of a PLEK machine, ensuring optimal playability and precision.

  • Neck: Comfortable C-shaped profile—thicker than some modern guitars, but not overly bulky.

  • Tuners: The original tuners have been replaced with high-end Rodgers tuners, offering smooth, precise tuning and an elegant aesthetic upgrade.

  • Condition: Excellent structural condition with no cracks or repairs. Some wear to the back of the neck, and little nail marks here and there on the top, and some wear to the back of the guitar - see photos!

Sound & Playability:

This guitar exemplifies everything great about a world-class traditional concert instrument: warmth, depth, and extraordinary responsiveness. It has an exceptionally open and powerful sound, offering a broad tonal palette—from dark, mysterious lows to crisp, singing trebles.

Despite being a traditional build, this Ruck has remarkable volume for its class, easily filling a room without sacrificing nuance. The sustain is outstanding, and the evenness across registers makes it highly expressive in any setting.

Final Thoughts:

Robert Ruck guitars have long been regarded as some of the finest American-built classical guitars, and this instrument is a great representation of his work. With its unique bracing, premium Brazilian rosewood, recent meticulous refretting with the aid of a PLEK machine, and upgraded Rodgers tuners, it offers both historical significance and peak performance.

For serious players looking for an elite-level concert guitar with incredible sound and projection, this is an opportunity not to be missed.
