Up for sale is this gorgeous 1929 Francisco Simplicio. Built the same year that Simplicio won the gold medal at the 1929 World’s Fair in Barcelona. He died just 3 years later in 1932, after building nearly 300 guitars.
First, the sound. It’s haunting, rich, vibrant, and clear. You feel every note punch you in the chest, as the whole guitar vibrates. The only thing I can compare the magic to, is that of a Antonio de Torres that I played years ago.
It also has all the volume you could ask for, which is absolutely insane for an instrument built almost 100 years ago. Please see the video attached to this listing, where I hope you can hear some of this (higher quality video coming soon).
This guitar bears the number 251, and is exemplary in every way. The highly figured Birdseye Cuban mahogany of the back and sides is nearly unrivaled. If you search the many available images for Simplicio‘s instruments, I challenge you to find one with as highly figured of a back as this one. Original tuners (with one replaced tuner button), a beautiful carved headstock unique and iconic of Simplicio, a 50mm nut and 648mm scale. it’s easy to play with a medium-low action, but without much buzzing.
This guitar originally belonged to the Argentine professional guitarist Lucia Sanchez Jordan. It was given to her by her teacher..
The guitar has repaired cracks in the top and back, expertly done by Lubos Naprstek, who has seen and worked on many Simplicios. He feels this is a special one, as well. The cracks are stable and repaired and do not affect the sound or playability.
Being that there are only 300 or so of these in the world, and that Simplicio is regarded as one of the greatest and famed guitar makers of all time, they will only become more rare, making it a great investment as well.
The guitar comes with a great Visesnut case. Trial is accepted and encouraged here in Austin TX only. If you purchase within the US, I will ship it via overnight mail for no extra charge.
